Considerations regarding Euthanasia
- The rights of doctors, nurses, hospice workers to exercise their conscience
must remain protected. Any move to make them participate in euthanasia is
wrong.
- Hospices must be allowed to continue preventing euthanasia on their
premises. If this all about choice, then they should be allowed to choose not
to be involved.
- The current law has very little, to no, ways to identify coercion. More people
including our disabled community will be at risk if this is expanded.
- When people say they would prefer to die than live, it makes a statement to
those living with the same health issues. It says their life is not worth living
either.
- Our understanding is that euthanasia and assisted suicide is provided free to
those whose application is accepted, but medical staff are paid. In the case of
doctors, the payment by the State (i.e the taxpayer) is understood to be well
over $1000 per killing.
- We also understand that the number of deaths under the End of Life Choice
Act is now in the hundreds per year. How many of those were a result of
actual choice free of coercion, is anybody’s guess, as there are no
independent witnesses required.
